How to get on Instagram's Suggested for You
"Suggested for you" is the row of accounts Instagram shows under a profile someone just followed, in the feed, in the Reels tab and on the people tab in search. For a small business it is the quiet channel that sends a few new followers a day without a post travelling, and it is almost never explained, partly because Instagram explains it in only two places and partly because most of what people write about it is guesswork.
This page uses the two places Instagram has explained it, plus the recommendation rules that govern all of them, to answer the question properly: what suggestions are, where they come from, the eligibility switch that decides whether you appear at all, and what makes Instagram decide your account is similar to one somebody just chose to follow.
The short answer
Instagram suggests your account to people who just followed a similar profile and in Suggested for You lists built from what a viewer follows and engages with, so the way in is an eligible public account with one clear subject, engaged followers who overlap with accounts like yours, and a profile that makes the similarity obvious.
Instagram makes two kinds of suggestion. Suggested accounts: when someone taps Follow on a profile, Instagram's help centre says "they'll see suggestions of similar profiles that they might also want to follow, such as mutual friends or other people they might know", and the same similar-profiles logic feeds the Suggested for You rows in feed and search. Suggested posts: content from accounts a viewer does not follow, chosen on "your activity" (accounts followed, posts liked, saved, reposted or commented on), "your connections", information about the post and "how many times people have interacted with that account in the past few weeks". Both are recommendations, so both run through Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines: only public accounts are eligible, a professional account can read its status in Account Status, and "if you're eligible, it means that Instagram may recommend your account or content on Reels, feed, Explore, search or suggested accounts to people who don't follow you".
So there are three levers. Eligibility: a public account with Account Status clear. Similarity: Instagram decides who you resemble from the accounts your followers also follow and engage with, so an account with one clear subject, a name line and bio that say it plainly, and followers drawn from the audiences of accounts like yours is easy to place; an account that posts about everything is placed nowhere. Activity: recent interactions with your account are a listed signal for suggested posts, so daily engagement, replies and a steady posting rhythm keep the account warm. There is no application, no setting that turns suggestions on for you, and no benefit in following hundreds of accounts to seed it; the one setting that exists ("Show account suggestions on profiles") turns you off, and switching it off means you "won't appear as a suggestion on someone else's profile either".
What Instagram has published about suggestions
The clearest statement is on the help page about turning the feature off: "When someone taps Follow on your Instagram profile, they'll see suggestions of similar profiles that they might also want to follow, such as mutual friends or other people they might know." That is the mechanism for suggested accounts, seen as the row that slides open under a profile after a follow, and it is reciprocal: the same page notes that if you turn account suggestions off for your profile, "you won't appear as a suggestion on someone else's profile either". The switch lives in Edit profile on the web ("Show account suggestions on profiles").
For suggested posts, the help page "How Instagram determines which posts appear as suggested posts" lists the inputs: "Your activity: the accounts you follow and what posts you've liked, saved, reposted or commented on"; "Your connections: your history of connecting with that account or with similar accounts"; "Information about the post: how popular the post may be, how others on Instagram are interacting with the post, when or where it was posted"; "Information about the account: how many times people have interacted with that account in the past few weeks"; and activity on Threads. Suggested posts, it adds, "aren't ads from businesses".
Both run through the same gate. The recommendation eligibility page: "If you're eligible, it means that Instagram may recommend your account or content on Reels, feed, Explore, search or suggested accounts to people who don't follow you", and "if your account is not eligible to be recommended, none of your content will be recommended". Suggested accounts is named in that list, which is the fact most guides miss: an account that is not eligible for recommendations is not suggested to anyone, however similar it is. The Explore guide covers the same gate for posts.
The three levers: eligibility, similarity, activity
Eligibility. Public account, Account Status clear (profile, menu, Account Status under "More info and support"; professional accounts see recommendation eligibility there). Private accounts are never suggested to strangers. A profile photo or bio that goes against the Recommendation Guidelines is enough to remove you; Account Status says if it has.
Similarity. Instagram infers who you resemble from overlap: the accounts your followers also follow, the accounts people who engage with you also engage with, mutual connections. You cannot set it, but you can make it obvious: one subject held for months, a name line that names it in the words people search, and followers who arrived from the audiences of accounts like yours rather than from giveaways or follow trains. The target audience guide is the practical half.
Activity. "How many times people have interacted with that account in the past few weeks" is a listed signal, and it decays. Replies to every comment, daily engagement in your audiences, Stories that get taps and a posting rhythm you keep all hold it up; a month of silence lets it fall to nothing, and a suggestion for a silent account is a suggestion Instagram has no reason to make.
What makes an account "similar" in practice
Think about it from the follower's side. Someone follows a wedding photographer in Brisbane. Instagram looks for accounts that person's followers also follow and that people like them engage with: other Brisbane wedding suppliers, other wedding photographers, the venues those photographers tag. An account appears in that row when its audience overlaps the audience of the account just followed. Overlap is built, not declared: it comes from who follows you and who engages with you.
That is why the growth method decides the suggestion outcome. Followers gained by daily engagement with the audiences of five specific accounts your customers already follow are, by construction, people who also follow those accounts, so Instagram sees the overlap immediately and starts suggesting you beside them. Followers gained by a viral off-niche Reel, a loop giveaway or a follow-for-follow group overlap with nothing in particular, and the account is suggested beside nothing in particular. The worth-it guide explains the difference in numbers; it is also the basis of how Virallized chooses which audiences to work in for a client.
The profile completes the picture. Instagram reads names, bios and captions (the Instagram SEO entry has the detail), so "Wedding photographer · Brisbane" in the name line and a first bio line about couples who hate posing tell the system, in words, what the overlap data says in numbers. Collab posts with accounts in the same audience add a direct connection that both the similarity and the connections signals can read.
What does not get you suggested
Following hundreds of accounts in your niche. Who you follow affects your own feed, not who you are suggested beside. At volume it earns an action block and a following count that makes the profile read as follow-for-follow.
Hashtags. Not on Instagram's factor list for suggested posts or accounts. Five per post is the cap since December 2025, and they help placement slightly, not suggestion.
Buying followers or engagement. Bought accounts overlap with every other bought audience and nothing real, so the similarity signal points at spam. It also pads the follower base with accounts that never interact, which lowers the "past few weeks" signal every real post depends on.
Posting more. More posts to the same followers do not change who you resemble. Two strong posts a week on one subject build the signal; a post a day across five subjects blurs it.
Any app or service that promises to get you suggested. There is no application and no switch. Anything that claims to flip one is selling engagement, which is the previous card.
A four-week plan
Week one: check Account Status and fix anything it flags; make the account public if it is not; write the subject into the name line and the first bio line; pin three posts that show it. Week two: post two or three pieces on that subject in the formats people save (the saves and shares guide has them), and start twenty minutes a day of real engagement with the audiences of five accounts your customers already follow. Week three: add a collab post with one of those accounts or a peer with the same audience, and ask followers in a Story to add you to Favorites so the activity signal holds. Week four: read Insights for the sources of new followers and profile visits; suggestions do not have their own line, but a rise in profile visits on days you posted nothing is the shape of it.
Give it a second month before judging. Similarity is built from thousands of small overlaps and it lags the work by weeks; the accounts that get suggested consistently are the ones that have been unmistakably about one thing, to one audience, for long enough that Instagram has no doubt where they belong. The strategies pillar sets that inside the rest of a growth plan.
Common questions
How does Instagram decide which accounts to suggest?
For suggested accounts, Instagram's help centre says that when someone follows a profile they see "similar profiles that they might also want to follow, such as mutual friends or other people they might know", inferred from overlap in who follows and engages with whom. For suggested posts it lists the viewer's activity and connections, information about the post, and how many times people have interacted with the account in the past few weeks.
How do I get my account in Suggested for You?
Be eligible (public account, Account Status clear), be easy to place (one subject, a name line and bio that say it, followers drawn from the audiences of accounts like yours), and stay active (replies, daily engagement, a kept posting rhythm). There is no application or switch; the only setting turns suggestions off.
Why am I not showing up in suggested accounts?
Check Account Status: an account that is not eligible for recommendations is not suggested anywhere. Then check the switch ("Show account suggestions on profiles" in Edit profile on the web) is on. If both are fine, the account has not built enough overlap with any audience to be placed, which one subject and targeted engagement fix over a month or two.
Does turning off account suggestions hurt growth?
It removes you from the row under other people's profiles: Instagram says if you turn it off "you won't appear as a suggestion on someone else's profile either". For an account that wants to be found, leave it on.
Do suggested accounts help you grow?
Yes, quietly: they send a trickle of new followers who already follow accounts like yours, on days you post nothing. It is not a large channel, but it is the best-matched one, because every suggestion is made to someone who just chose a similar account.
Can I pay to be suggested on Instagram?
No. Suggested posts "aren't ads from businesses", and no product turns suggestions on. Boosting a post is an ad, shown as one, and it does not change who Instagram suggests your account beside.
Does following people get you suggested to their followers?
No. Who you follow shapes your own feed. Suggestions are built from who follows and engages with you, so the way to be suggested beside an account is to have an audience that overlaps its audience, which engagement in that audience builds and mass-following does not.
