How to make a text post on Instagram
People search this because Instagram will not let them do the obvious thing: type a sentence and post it. The feed only takes photos and videos. So a text post on Instagram is always a picture of words, and the whole craft is making that picture look deliberate rather than like a screenshot.
Below: the four kinds of text post the app actually supports, a step-by-step for the feed version that looks designed, what to write on it, and the shortcut for a business that wants every text post to look like the same brand.
The short answer
Instagram's feed has no text-only post type, so a text post is an image of your words: make a 1080 by 1350 (4:5) or 1080 by 1440 (3:4) image with one sentence in large type on a plain or brand-coloured background, post it like a photo, and put the rest in the caption. Inside the app you can also add text over a photo in the post editor (since August 2024), post a text-only Story in Create mode, or share a 60-character Note above your DMs that lasts 24 hours.
For a business, the fastest route is a template: the same background, type and logo corner every time, so text posts read as one brand. The AI Post mode in Virallized AI composites your headline into a designed image with your logo placed, and the carousel generator makes text-led slides at Instagram's native sizes.
The four kinds of text post on Instagram (and a fifth)
The feed text image. The one people mean. A 4:5 or 3:4 image with your words on it, posted like any photo. It lives on your grid, takes a caption and can be a carousel. The rest of this guide is mostly about this one.
Text over a photo, in the app. Since August 2024 the post editor lets you add text to a photo in a choice of fonts, and layer other images on it as stickers. Quick, but the type sizes and fonts are the app's, so it rarely looks like your brand.
A Story in Create mode. Tap the camera, choose Create, type on a coloured background. Text only, no photo needed, gone in 24 hours unless you add it to a highlight.
A Note. Up to 60 characters of text (or a short music or video clip) that sits above your DMs for 24 hours, shown to followers who follow you back or Close Friends. Good for a one-line announcement, useless for anything longer.
Threads, if what you want is a text feed. Instagram's sister app is text first and cross-posts to your Instagram Story. If the plan is to post sentences daily, that is the app built for it.
Step by step: a feed text post that looks designed
Size it right first. 1080 by 1350 (4:5) is the classic standard, and 1080 by 1440 (3:4) is the tallest post-ready size and matches the profile grid, so the words are not cropped on your profile. The size guide has the full table.
Then one thought per image, twenty words or fewer, set large enough to read at grid size; the test is to shrink the image to a thumbnail and see whether the first line still reads. Dark type on a light ground or light type on a dark ground, never text over a busy photo without a scrim. Add your brand colour and a small logo in the same corner every time, export as PNG or JPG, and post it with a caption that says what the image could not. The caption is where the second and third sentences go, not the image.
What to write on a text post
The lines that work are the ones that would work as a hook: a customer's exact words, a one-line tip, a specific number, an unpopular opinion in your niche, a question your customers already have, an announcement with a date. The lines that do not work are generic quotes and motivation, which read as filler and get scrolled. The hooks library has 42 patterns with the line to steal, and the post ideas library has 36 posts that start as one sentence.
Text posts as carousels
A text post with more than one sentence to say should be a carousel: the headline on slide one, one idea per slide, and up to 20 slides. It is the teaching format on Instagram, and it is why text-led carousels are the most saved posts on most business accounts. Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark, built on 35 million posts, puts carousels at a 0.55% average engagement rate against 0.37% for single images. The carousel ideas library and the templates gallery show the structures.
Text in captions and bios: the bold trick
Instagram captions and bios have no formatting, so the bold and italic text you see is Unicode: different characters that happen to look like styled letters. The free bold text tool converts a line into seven styles you paste anywhere. Use it for one line, not a paragraph: screen readers read those characters badly, and a whole caption of them is unreadable to some of your followers.
Do text posts perform?
A plain quote card that says nothing is the most skipped post on Instagram; a specific line in your own voice is one of the most shared. The difference is the sentence, not the format. If the line would stop a stranger in your niche as a caption's first sentence, it works as a text post. If it only makes sense to people who already follow you, it is a title, and it will be scrolled.
Making text posts in your brand, automatically
The design step is what makes people give up on text posts: every one is a fresh layout, and they never quite match. The AI Post mode in Virallized AI removes it. Type the line, and it generates the background, composites your headline over a readable scrim with your logo placed, and writes the caption in the brand voice you saved once. The carousel generator does the multi-slide version in any of 30 templates, exported at Instagram's native sizes, and the templates gallery shows what they look like.
Your first five generations are free with every feature unlocked (a card on file verifies the account; nothing is charged unless you subscribe), plans start at $49 a month, and Virallized growth clients already have ten a month included.

Common questions
Can you post just text on Instagram?
Not in the feed: it only accepts photos and videos, so a feed text post is an image of your words. Text only is possible in a Story (Create mode, 24 hours), in a Note (60 characters above your DMs, 24 hours) and on Threads, Instagram's text app.
Is there a text post generator for Instagram?
Yes. Virallized AI's AI Post mode turns a typed line into a designed image with your headline composited in and your logo placed, plus a caption in your saved voice; the carousel generator makes the multi-slide version. Design editors such as Canva also have text post templates you lay out by hand.
How do people put text over their photos on Instagram?
In the app: pick the photo when creating a post, tap the text tool in the editor, type, and choose a font. Instagram added this to feed posts in August 2024, along with layering other images on a photo as stickers. For brand-consistent type, make the image in a design tool first and upload it.
What size should a text post be?
1080 by 1350 pixels (4:5) is the classic standard; 1080 by 1440 (3:4) is the tallest post-ready size and matches the profile grid, so nothing is cropped on your profile. Keep the words inside the middle of the image so the grid crop never cuts a line.
How much text can I put on an Instagram post?
On the image, twenty words or fewer if you want it read at grid size. In the caption, up to 2,200 characters, of which only the first line or so shows before “more”, so the first sentence matters most. Anything longer than a sentence on the image should be a carousel.
Do text posts get engagement on Instagram?
Specific ones do: a customer's exact words, a real number, a useful one-line tip, an opinion in your niche. Generic quote cards are the most skipped post type on the app. Text-led carousels do best of all; Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark puts carousels at 0.55% average engagement against 0.37% for single images.
Can I make a text post on Instagram from my laptop?
Yes. Design the image on the laptop, then upload it at instagram.com, which supports creating feed posts from a browser. The in-app text-over-photo tool is on the phone only.
