How to remove followers on Instagram: one at a time, all spam at once, or many

The follower list fills with accounts you did not ask for: bots, empty profiles, the leftovers of a giveaway, the results of a purchase somebody made years ago. The question is how to get rid of them, fast, in bulk, without blocking anyone, and the answer is that Instagram built exactly one bulk tool, for one category, and everything else is one tap at a time or a third-party app you should not use.

The short answer

Instagram gives you two tools and no third: remove a follower one at a time from your Followers list (they are not notified), or remove every account it has filtered as potential spam in one tap from the Potential spam list, with a filter in Settings that stops likely spam accounts following you without your confirmation. There is no bulk remove for ordinary followers, and the apps that offer one need your login, which is the route to action blocks. Whether removing is worth the hours depends on how many of the followers are dead weight, and the arithmetic is below.

One at a time. Instagram's help page: go to your profile, open Followers, tap the X beside the follower (Remove on the web), then Remove to confirm. The same page opens with "If your account is set to private, you can remove people from your followers list", so if your public account shows no X beside the names, switch to private for the session, remove, and switch back; nothing else about the account changes. "When you remove a follower, they won't be notified that you've removed them." Blocking does the same thing more firmly, and blocked people are not notified either. All potential spam at once. Instagram filters accounts that look like spam into a separate list: "Accounts that are likely to be spam will be filtered to a separate list in your Followers tab." Open your follower list, tap Potential spam, and either review them one by one (Confirm or Delete) or tap Remove all spam followers, then Remove. "We won't tell them that they've been removed from your followers." The filter itself lives under Settings and privacy, Followers, "Filter spam followers", and while it is on, "accounts that are likely to be spam can't follow you without your confirmation".

That is the whole toolkit, and it means bulk removal of ordinary followers does not exist inside Instagram. The apps that advertise it ("cleaner", "ghost follower remover", "unfollow and remove in bulk") work by logging into your account and driving it, which is automation under Instagram's rules and the fastest route to an action block, and several of them harvest the login for other purposes. Do not hand a follower-removal app your password. If the job is a few hundred obvious fakes, an hour of tapping Remove does it; if it is thousands, the maths below says to stop counting and start outgrowing them.

The three tools, step by step

Remove one follower. Profile, Followers, the X beside the name (Remove on the web), Remove to confirm. Not notified. Use it for the obvious fakes at the top of a recent spike, and for anyone you do not want reading you.

Remove all potential spam. Profile, follower list, Potential spam, Remove all spam followers, Remove. Instagram's own filter decides what lands in this list, so it catches the crude bots and misses the ones built to pass. Not notified.

Turn the spam filter on. Profile, menu, Settings and privacy, Followers, toggle Filter spam followers. Likely spam accounts then need your confirmation to follow you, which stops the list refilling.

Block, when it matters. Blocking removes the follower and stops them following again or seeing your posts. Not notified. Use it for people, not for bots; bots do not come back under the same name.

Why there is no bulk button, and what the apps do instead

Instagram has never offered bulk removal of ordinary followers, and the reason is the same one behind every limit on the platform: a tool that removes followers in bulk is a tool that can be pointed at anything in bulk, and Instagram's rules restrict automation on accounts. The one bulk action it does allow, Remove all spam followers, works only on the accounts its own filter has flagged.

The third-party apps fill the gap by logging in as you and tapping Remove very fast, which is automation acting from your account. Is removing followers worth it? The arithmetic

Dead followers cost you one thing: the engagement rate, because they sit in the denominator and never react. An account with 5,000 followers and 100 reactions a post runs at 2%, under the band for its size; if 2,000 of the 5,000 are fakes, the real rate is 3.3% and Instagram's ranking is reading the lower one. Removing the 2,000 fixes the rate immediately and takes about six hours of tapping. Adding 2,000 real followers fixes it more slowly and raises the reactions as well, because the new people react. So the rule we use: remove the obvious fakes from any recent spike (they are at the top of the list and take minutes), run the spam list once, turn the filter on, and then stop. Followers who are simply quiet are not fakes and removing them changes nothing except the count. How to tell which followers to remove

Open the follower list and sort by newest. A run of accounts with no profile photo, no posts, a string of digits in the username and hundreds of follows each is the signature; so is a burst of followers on a day you did nothing. Those are the removals worth the taps.
