How to reset the Instagram algorithm, and what it actually fixes

"Reset the Instagram algorithm" is searched by two different people. One is a viewer whose feed has curdled into couples Reels and gym motivation and wants the recommendations to start over. The other is a creator whose reach has fallen and hopes there is a switch that makes Instagram forget. Instagram built a real button for the first person in late 2024 and there is no button for the second, and most guides answer one while pretending to answer both.

This page does the reset properly, in Instagram's own steps as of 10 September 2026, says exactly what it does and does not do, then answers the creator's question honestly: what "resetting" an account's reach would mean, which parts of it are real, and the order to do them in.

The short answer

Instagram has an official reset: profile, menu, Content preferences, Reset suggested content, which wipes the suggestions you see in feed, Reels and Explore so they rebuild from what you do next. It changes what Instagram shows you. It does nothing to what Instagram shows other people about your account, so if the question is really "how do I reset my reach", the answer is a different list: Account Status, the engagement rate, and the next ten posts.

The official reset. Instagram's help centre: "You can reset your suggested content to see posts, reels and other content about topics that you may not normally see." The steps: tap your profile, tap the menu in the top right, under What you see tap Content preferences, tap Reset suggested content, tap Next and review the accounts you follow (and your ad topics, where ads are shown), then tap Reset suggested content. Instagram adds that it "can't be undone, but your suggestions will become more personalised again as you like, share and interact", that it "won't change who you follow or the ads that you see", and that it does not delete your data. The feature is in the app, not on the web. That is the whole reset, and it takes a minute.

What it fixes is your feed. Explore, the Reels tab and suggested posts in feed start from nothing and rebuild from your next taps, which is why the same help page tells you to review who you follow before resetting: the accounts you follow are the first signal the rebuild uses, so unfollowing the ones that dragged the suggestions is half the reset. What it does not touch is anything about how your own posts are ranked for other people. Their feeds are built from their activity, and Instagram's ranking of your post is made from the reactions of the first small audience it is shown to. There is no per-account memory a viewer's reset button could clear. If reach is the problem, the rest of this page is the reset that exists.

The official reset, step by step

1. Review who you follow first. The rebuild starts from your follows, so the reset help page offers a review before it resets. Unfollow the accounts whose posts you skip; mute the ones you want to keep for other reasons. This is the step that decides whether the new suggestions are better than the old.

2. Profile, menu, What you see, Content preferences. On the app only; the help page notes the feature is not available on computers.

3. Reset suggested content, then Next. Instagram shows the follow review and, where ads are shown, your ad topics.

4. Tap Reset suggested content again. It cannot be undone. Feed suggestions, Reels and Explore start over.

5. Teach it deliberately for a week. Suggestions rebuild from what you like, save, share and watch. Spend the first days interacting only with what you actually want more of, and use Not interested on the rest. The reset is the easy part; the retraining is the result.

What the reset does not do

It does not change your reach, your Account Status, whether your posts are recommended, or how any other person's feed treats your account. Those are decided by Instagram's ranking of each post you publish, which the help centre describes as predictions about how likely a viewer is to spend time on it, comment, like, share and tap the profile, made from the reactions of the first small audience it is shown to, with an account-level signal of how many times people have interacted with your account in the past few weeks. A viewer resetting their suggestions does not touch any of it, and neither does a creator resetting their own.

It also does not clear a restriction. If Account Status shows your content is not eligible to be recommended, that state is re-evaluated as your account and content change, not as your feed does. The not eligible for recommendation guide is the page for that; the algorithm guide has everything Instagram has published about ranking, with dates.

If you meant "reset my account's reach"

The honest version of that wish is three checks and one habit, in this order. Account Status: profile, menu, Account Status. If anything is listed, that is the whole problem until it is gone; nothing else on this list matters while a restriction is in place. The audience: run the fake follower checker or the audit and read the engagement rate against the band for your size. If it is under, the followers who never react are the weight on every post, and no reset clears them; only real followers outnumbering them does. The last ten posts: read non-follower reach on each in Insights. If it is near zero on all of them, nothing is being recommended and the content is not passing the first test; if it varies, the posts that passed tell you what the audience wants more of.

The habit is the reset that actually works on ranking, because the one account-level signal Instagram has named is recent interaction: "how many times people have interacted with that account in the past few weeks". Ten posts in a row built to be saved and sent, replies to every comment in the first hour, a Story a day, and daily engagement in front of the audience you want, from your own account or through a growth service that does it with people. Two to four weeks of that is what a "reset" looks like from Instagram's side: an account people are interacting with again.

The reset folklore, sorted

Delete the app and reinstall. Clears nothing on the account. Instagram's memory of your activity is on its servers, not your phone.

Go silent for 48 hours, or a week. There is no cooldown. Silence lets your follower reach fall too, so when you return the first test runs on a colder audience.

Delete your posts or your grid. Instagram ranks post by post and its account signal is a few weeks of interactions; deleting history removes the interactions and keeps the state. The delete old posts guide has the detail.

Switch account type back and forth. Account type is on no signal list Instagram has published. The business account guide covers what a switch does change.

Make a new account. The only true reset, and it resets the audience to zero. Sometimes right, usually not; the revive guide has the test for when it is.

Common questions

How do I reset the Instagram algorithm?

Profile, menu, Content preferences (under What you see), Reset suggested content, Next, review who you follow and your ad topics, then Reset suggested content again. It is in the app only, cannot be undone, and rebuilds from what you interact with next.

Does resetting suggested content delete anything?

No. Instagram says it does not change who you follow, does not change the ads you see and does not delete your data. It clears the suggestions you see in feed, Reels and Explore so they start again.

Does resetting the algorithm help my reach?

No. The reset changes what Instagram shows you, not what it shows other people about your account. Reach is decided post by post from the reactions of the first small audience each post is shown to, and by Account Status. The fixes for reach are on this page under the creator's question.

Why is my Instagram feed full of one topic?

Because suggestions rebuild from what you watch and tap, and a few seconds spent on a topic is a signal. Reset suggested content, review your follows, and for a week interact only with what you want more of, using Not interested on the rest.

Is there a way to reset my account so Instagram forgets a bad period?

Not a button. Instagram's account-level signal is recent interactions over a few weeks, so a bad period ages out when a good one replaces it: clear Account Status, fix the audience if the engagement rate is under the band, and post ten pieces built to be saved and sent with daily engagement behind them.
