Instagram's Edits app: what it does, and whether it boosts reach
Edits is Instagram's own video editor, released free on 22 April 2025 for iPhone and Android. It was built for making Reels: a camera that records up to 10 minutes, automatic captions, green screen, AI animation and licensed audio, with Reels insights in the same app.
The question creators actually ask is whether editing in Edits gets a Reel more reach than editing somewhere else. Instagram's head has answered that on the record, with a date and a warning, and this page gives his exact words.
The short answer
Edits is a free Instagram video editor for phones. In August 2025, Adam Mosseri said using it does help a little bit with reach, that the boost will not be around forever, and not to run content through Edits just to pass it off. Use it if you like the tools; your hook, watch time and originality decide reach far more.
The boost Mosseri described was small and temporary by his own account, and Instagram has not published whether it still applies. Treat any Edits advantage as a bonus on a Reel that is already good, not a reason a Reel will do well.
What reliably matters is that the video is original and edited for Instagram: no other app's watermark, a vertical frame and a hook in the first seconds. Edits makes those easy, and so does any editor used well.

Reach boost, per Mosseri: A little (Aug 2025; "not going to be around forever")
Edits combines a camera, an editor and Reels analytics in one free app. At launch it included a built-in camera that records clips up to 10 minutes long, automatic captions you can restyle, a green screen effect and video overlays, AI animation that brings still images to life, voice enhancement and noise reduction, and trending and licensed audio with sound and voice effects.
Reels creators also get insights in the app to plan what to make next. Instagram has kept adding to it since launch, so check the app for the current feature list; the basics above have been there from day one.
Does using Edits boost reach?
Adam Mosseri was asked this directly in August 2025. His answer: "For now, Edits does help a little bit with reach." He added that it is "not going to be something that's going to be around forever."
He also gave a warning in the same answer: "Do not just use Edits to try to pass through content", because Instagram can check for that. Running a video made elsewhere through Edits to collect the boost is the exact behaviour he ruled out.
Instagram has not said publicly whether the boost still exists in late 2026. Read it as what it was: a small, temporary nudge to get creators using a new app, not a ranking rule.
Edits or CapCut for Instagram?
Both edit vertical video well, and the better one is the one you finish Reels in. Edits is free throughout and was made around Instagram's formats; CapCut charges a subscription for some features and comes from TikTok's parent company.
The detail that matters more than the editor is the export. A video that still carries another app's watermark, or was obviously made for another platform and reposted, works against Instagram's originality rules, which reward content you created or materially edited yourself. Whichever editor you use, export clean and make it for Instagram.

What decides a Reel's reach instead
Mosseri named Instagram's top signals in January 2025: watch time, likes and sends, with sends counting most for reaching people who do not follow you. None of those is about which app made the video.
So the editing work that pays is the work that keeps people watching: a first frame that earns the next three seconds (see Instagram skip rate), captions for people watching muted, and a cut that drops every second nobody needs. Edits' automatic captions and quick trimming help with exactly those.
Edits insights worth reading
Edits carries the same Reels analytics you see in Instagram, closer to where you edit. For growth, three numbers deserve your attention after every Reel: skip rate, which tells you whether the opening worked; the retention curve, which shows where people left; and follows, which tells you whether the Reel turned viewers into followers.
A Reel with plenty of views and no follows usually means the profile did not give viewers a reason to stay. That fix is on profile visits but no followers.
Good Reels still need the right viewers
Editing is half of it. A well-edited Reel shown to the wrong people still gets skipped. The followers you build decide who sees each Reel first, and that first small audience decides how far it travels.
The method. With Virallized, you choose target accounts whose followers are the audience you want, and our team runs quality interactions with those people every day. The ones who like what they see visit your profile and follow. Nobody is delivered; every new follower decided. Plans run $99 to $299 a month, each scoped to a published range of 150 to 3,000 followers a month, with Virallized AI included for content, a 7-day money-back guarantee and no contract.
Common questions
What is the Instagram Edits app?
Instagram's own free video editor, released on 22 April 2025 for iPhone and Android. It has a 10-minute camera, automatic captions, green screen, AI animation, licensed audio and Reels insights.
Does using Edits boost reach on Instagram?
In August 2025 Adam Mosseri said "for now, Edits does help a little bit with reach", and that it is not going to be around forever. Instagram has not said publicly whether that still applies.
Is Edits better than CapCut?
Edits is free and made around Instagram's formats, with Reels insights built in; CapCut charges for some features. For reach, what matters more is exporting clean, original video made for Instagram.
Is Instagram Edits free?
Yes. Edits is free to download and use on iPhone and Android.
Can I run my videos through Edits to get more reach?
Mosseri warned against it: "Do not just use Edits to try to pass through content", saying Instagram can check for that.
Do videos with a TikTok watermark get less reach on Instagram?
Instagram's originality rules reward content you created or materially edited, and a watermark from another app marks a video as made elsewhere. Export without watermarks.
