What are Instagram Highlights?

The definition: Instagram Highlights are collections of expired Stories saved to a profile — currently shown in a dedicated Highlights tab, marked with a heart icon alongside the posts and Reels tabs, rather than the old row of circles. Unlike Stories, which leave the tray after 24 hours, Highlights stay until removed — permanent shelves where an account keeps its proof, FAQs, offers, and best moments for new visitors.

How Highlights work

A highlight is currently built from Stories — live ones or anything in your archive, though Instagram has been loosening this — grouped under a name and a cover image. Since late 2025 they live in their own profile tab (the heart icon) instead of the old circles row between bio and grid: Instagram moved them as part of simplifying profiles to put more content above the fold. The underlying story keeps its stickers and links, and adding or removing it from a highlight doesn't touch the archive copy.

Because the raw material is Stories you've already posted, Highlights cost nothing extra to produce — they're the account's daily output, curated after the fact. The craft is in the curation: names a stranger understands at a glance, covers that read as a set, and contents pruned so each collection still delivers what its label promises.

Highlights and the visit-to-follow decision

Most follows are decided on the profile. A stranger arrives from a reel, a share, or search, and gives the page a few seconds: bio, pinned posts, the first rows of the grid — and, one tap away, the Highlights tab. Highlights are still the fastest way to answer what the bio can't fit — who this is for, whether it's credible, what's on offer — which makes them a lever at the moment profile visits turn into follows or bounces. The tab placement raises the bar: a visitor has to choose to open it, so the tab has to be worth the tap.

That's also the argument for treating Highlights as a landing page rather than a scrapbook. The visitor who opens your Highlights tab is new, not nostalgic. They need orientation — start here, this is the proof, this is the offer — not a tour of the archive.

What belongs in Highlights

The dependable set: proof (results, testimonials, press, client work), an FAQ, an offer or how-to-work-together, and a best-of that shows the account at full strength. Accounts with a story worth telling add a start-here. What doesn't belong: unlabeled dumps and collections untouched for a year — a visitor who taps into a stale Highlights tab has been told the account doesn't maintain its own front door.

Common questions

Do Highlights expire?

No. The stories inside them expired from the public tray after their 24 hours, but once pinned to a highlight they remain viewable on your profile indefinitely — until you remove them or delete the highlight. That permanence is the point: Highlights are the mechanism that lets a disappearing format leave something durable behind on the profile.

Can you see who viewed a Highlight?

Only briefly. Story viewer lists are available for a limited window after the original story is posted; while that window is open, views of the highlight show up like any other story views. After it closes, the highlight keeps collecting views but Instagram no longer shows you names. For older highlights, treat viewership as directional — a sign the circle earns taps — rather than a roster.

How many Highlights should a profile have?

Enough to answer a new visitor's main questions — who you are, proof, what's on offer — and few enough that the tab reads as curated rather than archived. Since Highlights now sit in their own profile tab, each collection's name and cover has to justify a tap on its own; the most recently updated ones currently surface first, so keeping key collections fresh keeps them prominent.
