Can't go live on Instagram? The 1,000-follower rule, and what to do
Until the summer of 2025 anyone could go live on Instagram. Then, around 1 August 2025, people with smaller or private accounts opened the Live camera and found a notice instead: only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more can create live videos.
This page explains the rule and the other reasons the Live button disappears, what you can do while you are under 1,000, and whether going live is worth working towards at all.
The short answer
Instagram only lets public accounts with 1,000 followers or more start a live broadcast. If your account is private, or under 1,000 followers, the Live option is blocked; make the account public and reach 1,000 to get it back. Teen Accounts have Live off by default, and an out-of-date app can hide it too.
The rule is a follower threshold, and Instagram applies it to both conditions together: the account must be public and it must have at least 1,000 followers. Instagram confirmed the change to TechCrunch on 1 August 2025 and said only that it is designed to improve the overall Live consumption experience.
If you are close to the line, the fix is growth, not a setting. Every other Live feature, from guests to scheduling, sits behind the same gate.
Followers needed to go live: 1,000 (Instagram Help Center)
Account type: Public (private accounts cannot start a Live)
Rule in force since: Aug 2025 (confirmed to TechCrunch on 1 August)
Instagram's help page states it plainly: only Instagram users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more will be able to start a live broadcast. Accounts that do not qualify see a notice that the requirements changed and that only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more can create live videos.
Before August 2025 there was no threshold at all, regardless of follower count or whether the account was public or private. The same 1,000-follower, public-account gate also applies to starting a broadcast channel, so both of Instagram's one-to-many tools now open at the same size. Every published cap is on Instagram limits.
Why you can't go live: the checklist
Work down the list. Most people stop at the first or second line.
Is the account public?
A private account cannot start a Live at any follower count. Switch it to public in Settings, under Account privacy.
Do you have 1,000 followers?
The count has to be at least 1,000 when you try. If you hover just above it, a few unfollows or a round of fake-account removals can put you back under.
Is it a Teen Account?
Live is off by default for Teen Accounts, so a younger user needs the setting changed before the button appears.
Is the app up to date?
Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play, then close and reopen it. Features often reach the newest version first.
Is anything flagged on the account?
Open Account status in Settings. A restriction for a broken guideline can limit features until it clears.
I have 1,000 followers and still can't go live
Check the account is public first; that is the condition people miss when they already have the followers. Then look at the exact count: Instagram removes fake and inactive accounts from follower lists, and a count of 1,003 on Monday can be 996 by Wednesday without you losing a single real follower.
If both conditions are met, update the app and check Account status. A broadcast can also be scheduled once you qualify: Instagram lets you schedule a live from 1 hour to 90 days ahead, which gives followers a reminder to come back.
Does going live help you grow?
A Live is mostly for the followers you already have. It gives them a reason to show up at a set time, lets you answer questions in real time and lets you bring in up to three guests through Live Rooms, who must be following you. That builds loyalty and sales more than it brings in strangers.
The growth case is the guest slot. Going live with another creator puts you in front of their audience for the length of the broadcast, which is the same mechanism as a collab post but in real time. Treat Live as a retention and conversion tool, and use Reels and collabs for reaching new people.
What to do while you're under 1,000
You lose nothing by building toward the line with the tools you already have. Stories with question and poll stickers do most of what a small Live does: they get replies, show your face and keep followers coming back daily.
Why the kind of follower matters here. A count that crosses 1,000 with followers who never watch gives you a Live button and an empty room. The followers worth having are people in your niche who will turn up when you go live.
The method. With Virallized, you choose target accounts whose followers are the audience you want, and our team runs quality interactions with those people every day. The ones who like what they see visit your profile and follow. Nobody is delivered; every new follower decided.
The record. In a 150-account sample of client accounts that had each run at least 90 days, measured to 19 September 2026, the median account added 302 net followers a month and all 150 finished larger than they started. Plans run $99 to $299 a month, each scoped to a published range of 150 to 3,000 followers a month, with Virallized AI included for content, a 7-day money-back guarantee and no contract.
Common questions
Why can't I go live on Instagram?
Since August 2025, only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more can start a live broadcast. If your account is private or under 1,000 followers, Live is blocked. Teen Accounts have Live off by default, and an out-of-date app can also hide the option.
How many followers do you need to go live on Instagram in 2026?
1,000, on a public account. Instagram's help page says only users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more can start a live broadcast.
Can a private Instagram account go live?
No. The account must be public as well as having 1,000 followers. Switch to public under Account privacy in Settings.
I have over 1,000 followers. Why can't I go live?
Check the account is public, that the count has not dipped back under 1,000 after fake-account removals, that the app is updated, and that Account status shows no restriction. Teen Accounts also have Live off by default.
Why did Instagram add a follower minimum for Live?
Instagram told TechCrunch the change is designed to improve the overall Live consumption experience. It gave no other reason.
Can I be a guest on someone else's Instagram Live?
The 1,000-follower rule is about starting a broadcast. Live Rooms let a host invite up to three guests, and guests must be following the broadcaster.
Does going live on Instagram get you more followers?
Mostly it deepens ties with existing followers. The growth comes from going live with a guest, which puts you in front of their audience; Reels and collab posts do more for reaching strangers.
