Buy an Instagram account? The followers don't come with you.

The honest answer · checked 29 October 2026

Buying an Instagram account buys a username and a follower count that someone else built. It does not buy the audience: those followers followed a different person, page or topic, and most of them will never engage with what you post. Instagram's Terms of Use say you can't "buy, sell, or transfer any aspect of your account (including your username)", and every account's About this account panel shows anyone who taps it when the account was created and how many times its username has changed. We run an organic growth service, so we have an interest here; that is why every claim below links to its source.

The product

What you actually buy

Accounts change hands on marketplaces such as Fameswap and Flippa, in forums and through private sellers. Fameswap, one of the oldest, shows a live counter of listings on its home page (more than 26,000 when we read it on 27 October 2026, priced at over $219 million in total) and its home page now leads with TikTok accounts, YouTube channels and theme pages. Prices run from about $100 for a small page to five or six figures for a large one.

What changes hands is the account itself: the username, the posts and the follower count. What does not change hands is why those people followed. They followed a meme page, a model, a niche topic or the person who ran it. When the account becomes yours and starts posting about your product or your life, most of them were never interested in that, and Instagram decides who sees each post by how people have responded to similar posts before.

So a bought account usually starts out with a big number and weak reach: posts go to followers who scroll past, the scroll-past teaches Instagram the content is not for them, and the account's reach sinks toward that of a much smaller one. Our guide to changing your Instagram niche explains why even owners who built an audience lose part of it when the subject changes.

The rules

What Instagram's rules say

Instagram's Terms of Use are direct about it: "You can't sell, license, or purchase any account or data obtained from us or our Service", and that "includes attempts to buy, sell, or transfer any aspect of your account (including your username)". A purchase is not a grey area in the Terms; it is named.

A bought account carries that risk for as long as you own it. Escrow protects the payment, not what happens after: Fameswap's own terms say it "is not liable for what happens in relation to Digital Assets after the Listing expires" and that it "does not monitor authenticity of any users".

The transparency

What everyone can see about a bought account

Instagram's About this account panel is open to anyone on Instagram, and Instagram says it can help people judge "whether an account is authentic or misleading". It shows the date joined, so a "new" brand with an account from 2017 is visible at a glance. It shows the former username count: not the old names, but how many times the username has changed. And for some accounts it shows Account based in, the country inferred from the account's activity.

Put those together and a bought account is easy to read: years older than the business, renamed several times, sometimes based in a different country from the one in the bio. Brands vetting a creator, customers checking a shop and journalists checking a source all know where to look.

The follower list tells the rest. A fitness coach whose followers are mostly meme accounts, or a local bakery followed mainly from another continent, does not look established; it looks bought. A free fake follower check shows how that reads from outside.

The cost

Where the money goes wrong

The price of an account is set by its follower count, and the follower count is the part you cannot use. A page sold for a large following may reach only a small share of it with a post on a topic those people never followed it for. Some listed accounts were also grown with bought followers before they were sold, so part of the number may not be people at all.

The other costs sit outside the listing: marketplace fees (Fameswap's escrow fee is 5% of the price, or $50 minimum), the months of posting to an audience that does not respond, and the chance of losing the account entirely. Meanwhile, the engagement rate that brands and customers judge you by starts out low and has to be rebuilt from zero.

The alternative

What to do instead

If you want an established-looking account fast, the honest route is to grow your own around the subject you will actually post about, so every new follower is someone who wants that. Our guide to growing a new Instagram account covers the first months: one subject, a profile built for strangers, and posts made to be saved and sent.

The audience half is what Virallized does: you choose the accounts whose followers should become yours, and people on our team reach them every day with quality interactions from your own account, so the people who follow chose to. Plans run from $99 to $299 a month with a published range for every plan, and the first payment has a 7-day money-back guarantee. In a 200-account sample of client campaigns that had run at least 90 days, measured to 23 October 2026, the median account added 407 net followers a month and all 200 finished larger than they started.

Common questions

Is it legal to buy an Instagram account?

Buying one is not a crime in most places, but it breaks Instagram's Terms of Use, which say you can't buy, sell or transfer any aspect of an account, including its username. Instagram can act on the account, and escrow services do not protect you after the sale.

Can people tell if an Instagram account was bought?

Often, yes. About this account shows anyone the date the account was created and how many times its username has changed, and for some accounts the country it is based in. Followers who clearly followed a different topic are the other giveaway.

Do you keep the followers when you buy an Instagram account?

You keep the count, not the interest. The followers followed the previous owner's content; when the account starts posting about something else, most of them stop engaging, and Instagram shows your posts to fewer people as a result.

How much does an Instagram account cost?

Marketplace listings run from about $100 for small pages to five or six figures for large ones, plus fees (Fameswap's escrow fee is 5% or $50 minimum). The price follows the follower count, which is the part a new owner benefits from least.

What is better than buying an Instagram account?

Growing your own account around the subject you will post about, so the followers want what you make. A growth service like Virallized does the daily outreach to people in your niche, from $99 a month with a published range and a 7-day money-back guarantee.
