How to get local followers on Instagram, from your city or a specific country

A café in Leeds does not need followers in Lisbon. For any business with a door, a delivery radius or a service area, ten thousand followers somewhere else are worth less than five hundred within twenty minutes of the till.

Instagram gives nobody a switch for this. There is no setting that says only show me to people in my city. What exists is a set of signals that tell Instagram, and tell people, where you are, and one reliable way to reach the locals directly.

The short answer

Instagram has no location filter for organic followers. You get locals by signalling the place everywhere (name field, bio, location tags, local hashtags), collaborating with nearby accounts, and engaging with the followers of businesses your neighbours already follow.

Start with the signals: the city in your name field and bio, a location tag on every post, Reel and Story, and one or two of your five hashtags spent on the place. Tagged content joins that location's page and can surface on the Instagram Map for people nearby.

Then go where the locals already are. The followers of the gym, the school, the market and the venue down the road are your neighbours, and engaging with them is the most direct route there is. It is also exactly what a location-targeted growth service does on your behalf.

For a specific country rather than a city the logic is the same at a larger scale: target the audiences of accounts whose followers live there. No honest method promises 100%, because Instagram gives no one a hard country filter.

What Instagram lets you target, and what it does not

Organic reach has no location setting. You cannot tell Instagram to show your posts only to one city. Its ranking decides who sees a post from signals about the content and the viewer, and location is one signal among many.

Ads do have one. A boost or an Ads Manager campaign lets you define an audience by location, down to a radius around an address. That buys views and profile visits from the area; neither tool has a followers goal, which we cover in is boosting Instagram posts worth it.

Insights tells you the truth afterwards. On any public account, Insights lists your followers' top cities and countries under Total followers. That is the scoreboard for everything on this page, and it is free.

The honest limit

Nothing, free or paid, gives a 100% local following. People move, travel and follow from anywhere. The goal is an audience that skews heavily local, and that is achievable.

Seven moves that bring local followers

1. Put the place in your name field and bio. The name field is searchable, so Plumber in Bristol does more work there than a company name nobody is searching for. Say the area you serve in the first line of the bio.

2. Tag the location on everything. Every post, Reel and Story. Tagged content joins that location's page, reached by tapping a geotag, and location-tagged posts, Reels and Stories can surface on the Instagram Map, introduced in 2025, for people nearby who have opted in.

3. Spend hashtags on the place. Instagram now caps a post at five hashtags. For a local account, one or two of the five should be the city or the city plus the trade, because that is how nearby customers filter.

4. Collaborate with your neighbours. A collab post with the bakery next door, the venue that hosts you or the local paper appears on both profiles and reaches both audiences, and their audience is local by definition.

5. Engage with the followers of local accounts. The people who follow the gym, the school parents' page, the farmers' market and the property manager live near you. Genuine comments and replies there put you in front of exactly the right people. Fifteen minutes a day is enough to see it work.

6. Make local content. Name the streets, the events, the weather, the team. A Reel about the new one-way system gets shared in local group chats in a way a generic tip never will, and sends are one of the signals Instagram weighs most.

7. Ask the people who already come in. A QR code by the till, the handle on the receipt and the bag, a line in the email footer. Customers who already know you are the easiest local followers there are.

Followers from a specific country

The same principle scales up. If you sell in Australia from a studio in Bali, or want a German-speaking audience from anywhere, the question becomes whose followers live there.

Target by association. The followers of a national retailer, a local-language creator, a city magazine or a national sports club overwhelmingly live in that country. Content and engagement aimed at those audiences build a following that skews the same way.

Post in the language and the time zone. Captions in the audience's language and posts timed for when they are awake are both signals and courtesy. Our page on the best time to post shows how to read the window in your own Insights.

Be wary of anyone selling a country. Packages of followers from one country are manufactured accounts with a flag on them, and they do what bought followers always do to reach. A real audience from a country comes from real people there choosing to follow.

This is the work our own service does by hand. You name the country or city in onboarding and choose target accounts whose followers live there, and the following that builds skews heavily that way. We run dedicated pages for the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada, among others.

Check where your followers actually are

Before changing anything, read the scoreboard. It takes a minute.

  1. Step 1

    Open Insights

From your profile, open Insights. It is available on every public account, personal ones included.

  2. Step 2

    Go to your followers

Tap Total followers and scroll to Top locations.

  3. Step 3

    Switch between cities and countries

The leading cities and countries are shown with percentages. Write down the share that is your own city or country.

  4. Step 4

    Check again in a month

If the local share is rising, the moves above are working. If the count rises and the local share falls, something is attracting the wrong people.

When paying makes sense for a local account

A boost with a radius, for a date. An opening, an event or an offer that ends on Sunday is what local ads are good at. Set the audience to your own area, choose messages or website visits as the goal, and pay from instagram.com rather than the iPhone app to avoid Apple's 30% fee.

A growth service, for the audience itself. Steady local growth is a daily job of engaging with the right neighbours, and most owners do not have the fifteen minutes. Virallized does it from your own account with targets you approve, from $99 a month with a 7-day money-back guarantee, and the dashboard shows which target produced each follower, so you can see whether the café or the gym is sending you better people.

Not a follower package. A thousand followers for ten dollars is a thousand accounts that will never walk through the door, and they lower the share of your audience that responds to each post, which is what Instagram ranks on.

Mistakes that fill a local account with the wrong people

Giveaways open to everyone. A prize with no local condition attracts entrants from everywhere who unfollow when it ends. Make the prize collectable in person and the problem solves itself.

Generic viral content. A trending audio clip can bring ten thousand views from another continent. It feels like growth and it dilutes the audience you need. Local relevance beats raw reach for any business with an address.

Follow-for-follow and engagement pods. They add accounts with no reason to care where you are. See does following people get you followers.

Tagging your home. A location tag is public. For a home-based business, tag the neighbourhood or the city, not the address, and tag venues after you have left them.

Common questions

Can you target followers by location on Instagram?

Not organically: Instagram has no setting that limits who sees your posts to one place. Ads and boosts can be aimed at a location or a radius, but they deliver views and profile visits, not followers. Location tags, a local name field and engaging with local audiences are what shift a following towards one place.

How do I get followers from a specific country on Instagram?

Aim at the audiences of accounts whose followers live there: national brands, local-language creators, city media. Post in the language and at the hours of that country. Avoid packages that sell followers by country, which are manufactured accounts. No method gives 100%, because Instagram offers no hard country filter.

How do local businesses get followers on Instagram?

By being findable and present locally: the area in the name field and bio, a location tag on every post, collabs with neighbouring businesses, real comments on local accounts, local content people share, and a QR code or handle wherever customers already see the business.

Do location tags still work on Instagram?

Yes. Tagged content joins the location's page, and location-tagged posts, Reels and Stories can surface on the Instagram Map, introduced in 2025, to people nearby who have opted in. Nothing is guaranteed, but it is a discovery path that costs nothing.

How can I see which cities my Instagram followers are from?

Open Insights, which every public account has, tap Total followers and scroll to Top locations. You can switch between cities and countries and see the leading ones with percentages.

Is it worth paying to get local followers?

For a dated offer, a boost aimed at a radius is good value, paid from instagram.com to avoid Apple's 30% fee. For steady local audience growth, a managed service that engages with local target accounts on your behalf is the closer fit. Virallized's plans start at $99 a month with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
