How to promote your Instagram account: every free and paid way, sorted by what it delivers

Promotion means one thing: getting your account in front of people who do not follow it yet. Everything else, the better bio, the nicer grid, only matters once a stranger has arrived.

There are eleven ways to do it that actually exist. Six cost time, five cost money, and three things sold as promotion are not promotion at all. Here is each one with what it really delivers.

The short answer

Free promotion comes from content that reaches non-followers, collaborations and showing up where your audience already is. Paid promotion is a boost, an ad, a creator shoutout or a growth service, and only the last is paid to find followers.

Start with the free routes, because they decide what the paid ones are worth: a profile that says who it is for, Reels that reach people who do not follow you, collab posts that borrow a second audience, and daily time spent in the comments of accounts your audience already follows.

Paid routes buy different things. A boost or an ad buys views and profile visits, and Instagram's own help pages offer no followers goal. A shoutout buys a recommendation. A managed growth service buys the outreach itself. Bought followers, coin apps and engagement pods buy a number and cost you reach.

First, make the account worth arriving at

Every method on this page ends the same way: a stranger lands on your profile and decides in a few seconds. Promotion multiplies that decision, so fix it before you multiply it.

The name field and bio carry the search. Put what you do in the name field, not only your name, because that field is searchable. The bio should say who the account is for and what they will get, in one line a stranger understands.

Pin your three best posts. A visitor sees the top of the grid first. Pinned posts let you choose what that is, instead of leaving it to whatever you posted last.

Check what visitors do now. If people already visit and do not follow, more visitors will not fix it. Our page on profile visits but no followers walks through what the visitor saw.

Six free ways to promote your account

Reels that reach non-followers. Reels are the format most likely to be shown to people who do not follow you. The signals that matter, in the words of Instagram's head Adam Mosseri, are watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. A Reel people send to a friend is promotion you did not pay for.

Collab posts. A collab post appears on both accounts' profiles and reaches both audiences. One collaboration with an account your audience already follows can do more than a month of posting alone.

Real engagement where your audience already is. Fifteen minutes a day of genuine comments on accounts in your niche puts your name in front of exactly the right people. It is slow and it works, and it is the manual version of what a growth service does.

Location tags and local presence. Tag the place on every post, Reel and Story. Tagged content joins that location's page and can surface on the Instagram Map, which is how a local account gets found by neighbours. More on the local followers page.

Your other channels. The email signature, the website footer, the packaging, the till receipt, the QR code on the door. People who already know you are the cheapest followers you will ever get, and most accounts never ask them.

Hashtags, within the new limit. Instagram now caps posts at five hashtags, so each one has to be specific: your niche, your city, your format. Five precise tags beat the old wall of thirty, which no longer exists as an option.

Five paid ways, and what each one really buys

A managed growth service. The only paid route where followers are the job, which is why it comes first. A team engages from your own account with people who follow accounts like yours, and the ones who like what they see follow you. Virallized has done this since 2017: $99 to $299 a month, a typical 150 to 500 new followers a month on Standard and 250 to 1,000 on Pro, no contract and a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Boosting a post. The button under your post turns it into an ad with one of three goals: more profile visits, website visits or messages. There is no followers goal. In most regions a boost paid inside the iPhone app carries Apple's 30% service fee, which boosting from instagram.com avoids. Full detail: is boosting Instagram posts worth it.

Ads Manager. The full tool, with exact audiences and testing. The campaign closest to growth is traffic to your Instagram profile, optimised for visits only. Since July 2025 an Instagram follows column lets you measure what each follower cost. Full detail: Instagram ads for followers.

Creator shoutouts. You pay an account your audience follows to recommend you. It buys trust as well as reach, which ads cannot. Sponsored content has to be disclosed, and prices vary enormously; a common rule of thumb for a sponsored feed post is $10 to $25 per thousand followers of the creator.

Giveaways. A prize in exchange for follows produces a spike, and then an unfollow wave when the prize is drawn, unless the prize only appeals to your real audience. The evidence is on our giveaways page.

Three things sold as promotion that are not

Bought followers. A seller adds accounts that follow on command and never engage. Instagram ranks each post by how your audience responds, so a thousand silent followers lower the share that responds and shrink the reach your real followers earn. The full arithmetic is on the buy followers page.

Follower apps and coin exchanges. Apps that promise free followers run a coin economy: your account follows strangers so strangers follow you, most unfollow within days, and the app usually wants your password to do it. Our follower apps guide sorts the safe from the dangerous.

Engagement pods. Groups that agree to like and comment on each other's posts. The engagement is real people but not real interest, and it teaches the algorithm the wrong audience. See engagement groups.

The test for any promotion offer

If it promises a number, it is selling accounts. People cannot be delivered. Real promotion puts you in front of people and lets them choose.

Which route fits which goal

You want customers this week. Boost or advertise a proven post to a defined local audience, with messages or website visits as the goal. That is what the ad system is built for.

You want a bigger, relevant audience over months. Reels and collabs for free, daily engagement in your niche if you have the time, a growth service if you do not. This is a compounding job, not a campaign.

You are launching something. A creator shoutout for trust plus a short ad burst for reach, pointed at one clear next step.

You have no budget at all. Collabs, comments and your existing channels. They are slower, and they are also what every paid route depends on, because paid traffic lands on the same profile.

A first month, week by week

A plan that fits around a job and needs no budget until week four.

  1. Week 1

    Fix the arrival

Name field, one-line bio, three pinned posts, link that goes somewhere useful. Ask every existing customer and contact to follow.

  2. Week 2

    Publish for strangers

Three Reels aimed at people who have never heard of you. Open on the point, no intro. Tag the location, use five precise hashtags.

  3. Week 3

    Borrow an audience

One collab post with an account your audience follows, and fifteen minutes a day of real comments in your niche.

  4. Week 4

    Put money behind what worked

Boost the best post from instagram.com, or start a growth service, and measure followers gained, not views.

Common questions

How do I promote my Instagram account for free?

Make Reels aimed at people who do not follow you, do collab posts with accounts your audience follows, spend time daily in your niche's comments, tag your location, use five precise hashtags and ask everyone who already knows you to follow. All of it costs time rather than money.

How do I promote my Instagram page to get more followers?

Choose routes that put the right people on your profile and make the profile convert them. Collabs and niche engagement bring the most relevant visitors for free. Among paid routes, only a growth service is aimed at followers; boosts and ads are optimised for visits and clicks.

How much does it cost to promote an Instagram account?

A boost costs whatever daily budget you set, plus Apple's 30% fee if paid in the iPhone app. Shoutouts are commonly priced around $10 to $25 per thousand followers of the creator. Virallized's managed growth plans are $99 to $299 a month with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Does Instagram promotion get you followers?

The Boost button and Ads Manager have no followers goal. They deliver views and profile visits, and some visitors follow. Since July 2025 Ads Manager can report the follows an ad produced, so you can measure your own cost per follower.

Is paying for Instagram promotion safe?

Official ads and boosts are safe. Creator shoutouts are safe when disclosed. A managed growth service working at a human pace from your own account is built to stay inside Instagram's limits. Bought followers and coin apps are the unsafe group: they damage reach and the apps often harvest passwords.

What is the fastest way to promote a new Instagram account?

Ask everyone who already knows you, publish a few Reels aimed at strangers, and land one collab with an established account in your niche. Speed beyond that comes from money: an ad for visits, or a growth service for followers.
